Students seeking to waive the General Education Foreign Language requirement (Beginning Foreign Language I) have the following options:

Credit by Examination

The Department of Modern Languages and Cultures offers credit for prior learning in French and Spanish. Credit earned in this way is recorded on your permanent transcript as “credit by examination,” but grades are not entered, so this does not affect your cumulative index. Departmental examinations require a $295 fee, payable to the Bursar before the examination is taken. Contact Meagan Oas, Administrative Assistant for the Department or Modern Languages and Cultures, at moas@brockport.edu or (585) 395-2269 for further information.

Oral Proficiency Interview Computer version (OPIc)

This internet-delivered test offered by Language Testing International (LTI) is the exclusive licensee of the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL). This internet-delivered assessment emulates a “live” oral interview, but delivery of questions is through a carefully designed program and via a virtual avatar, allowing the test to be taken on demand and at a time convenient to the candidate.

The OPIc fee is $108 (including remote proctoring service) payable by credit and debit cards directly to LTI and it is available in the following languages:

  • Arabic
  • Mandarin Chinese
  • English
  • French
  • German
  • Italian
  • Japanese
  • Korean
  • Pashto
  • Persian Farsi
  • European Portuguese
  • Brazilian Portuguese
  • Russian
  • Spanish

Students must receive a score equal to Novice High or higher to waive the Foreign Language General Education requirement.
