The highlight of my week was when a long meeting was unexpectedly cancelled, and I found myself with unscheduled time. I was able to walk to every non-residential building on campus and connect with faculty and staff on an individual basis. It was great to see so many open doors and to exchange a few words with colleagues from across campus. I am grateful for the opportunity, and hope to be able to use some unscheduled time later in the semester to repeat the experience. Thank you to all of the individuals who gave their time to me. I appreciate it.
Another highpoint of the week was attending the Susan B. Anthony event at the Convention Center on Wednesday evening with Provost Abraham, Ms. Jianna Howard, and Ms. Erin Rickman as well as a number of students to hear Candacy Taylor give a fantastic keynote address related to her most recent book, Overground Railroad.
The only other external meeting of note was related to the Rochester Area College Presidents Network. I am currently the Secretary of the association, having previously held the positions of Vice President and President. We discussed ways to expand our connections and efforts. For example, we are hosting a new website which draws together the job opportunities on each of our campuses, which may help recruitment for new faculty and staff who have trailing partners.
The week was otherwise filled with regular meetings, including cabinet one-to-ones, Senate’s first meeting of the semester, and cabinet’s regular meeting. At cabinet we reviewed Campus Leadership Summit feedback to help us plan the fall summit. We also reviewed Solar Eclipse plans and spent the majority of our time focusing on budget planning.
This week, Club Craze was held at Seymour Union. It was a packed event focused on connecting students with clubs, organizations and departments. The size of the crowd offered further evidence of our student body’s re-engagement with extra and co-curricular activities. I am thankful to the dedicated advisors that ensure that so many students are supported in their endeavors.
Next week Mike Andriatch and I will be meeting with donors out of state, so I look forward to updating you after our travels.
