Happy New Year!
As we prepare for the spring semester, I wanted to update you on a few initiatives from SUNY and from SUNY Brockport.
First, the Chancellor has published a SUNY Report on Enrollment and Financial Sustainability. It includes several positive references to SUNY Brockport, noting our work on relationships with our local community colleges, our work with veteran students, and our investment in engaging with students who stopped out to come back and finish their program at SUNY Brockport. You will note, if you read the report, that Brockport leads the way of all of four year institutions on positive enrollment change from Fall 2022 to Fall 2023 (p. 27). We increased our enrollment by 7.9% in that year alone. We were also second, behind Morrisville, in the list of first time undergraduate headcount enrollment changes at 25.2%.
I wanted to thank everyone who took part in the survey on shared governance and who invested time in reviewing our Principles of Shared Governance Document. That document has been ratified by Brockport University Senate, Brockport Student Government, President’s Cabinet, and College Council. We had an informal signing ceremony at the December College Council meeting. The revised document can be found on our Shared Governance Website. The committee is continuing to work on updating our Constitution of Campus Wide Committees and other areas.
Our spring enrollment numbers are looking strong, and our fall 2024 numbers are also trending in the right direction. There is much to celebrate as a result, and I’m grateful to the leadership and team in Undergraduate Admissions, the Center for Graduate Studies, and in each academic department for focusing on student success. Thank you, and thank you to all who support this work.
Campus climate is a focus both of our upcoming Cabinet Retreat and the Campus Leadership Summit, as we continue to invest in Building a Better Brockport. If you have ideas that you didn’t get a chance to include in one of the forums you have already attended, please reach out to Dr. Sara Kelly or Dr. Mario Fontana, who are co-leading the committee charged with reviewing our data and advising President’s Cabinet on potential paths forward. This is important work and I look forward to sharing the initial steps we plan to take to augment our campus climate in the near future.
I look forward to a vibrant and engaging semester on campus.
