Program Requirements

General Education Requirements (31-40 credits)

Students studying the major in Journalism and Broadcasting (JRB) pursue either a Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science degree and must complete the corresponding degree’s requirements.

The major in Journalism and Broadcasting consists of at least 39 credits of course work in courses within the Department of Journalism, Broadcasting and Public Relations. In addition, students must complete a course of study in a disciplinary area outside the Department of Journalism, Broadcasting and Public Relations. Typically, students complete a minor (normally 18-21 credits) or a second major (normally 30-36 credits).

In lieu of a minor or second major in another discipline, students may elect, with department approval, a contractual program consisting of a minimum of 18 credits of courses in an area not identified as a formal minor or major at Brockport. Study of a foreign language other than Spanish or French (in which minors are offered), bilingual-multicultural studies or foreign cultural studies are encouraged for such a program.

Completion of all requirements for the major thus requires a minimum of 57 credits of required and elective courses.

* Please note in the catalog course list some courses have pre-requisites and co-requisites.

Major Department Requirements (39 credits)

At least 39 credits (13 courses) including 12 credit hours (4 courses) of Required Core Courses plus 27 credit hours (9 courses) in one of the following concentrations:

  4. Media Studies (JMS) for students interested in an in-depth examination of the relationship between media and society.

At least 12 credit hours in the major must be taken at Brockport. All students must also complete a minor (typically 18-21 credit hours) or a second major (typically 30-36 credit hours) in a discipline other than Journalism, Broadcasting and Public Relations.
