Description
Administered by the Department of Journalism, Broadcasting and Public Relations, the major in Journalism and Broadcasting (JRB) prepares students for careers in online, TV, radio, newspaper and magazine journalism; public and community relations; public information; advertising; corporate communications; television and radio station sales; promotions and management; independent and corporate production studios, corporate media centers and government service.

Any undergraduate student can declare this major.
Program Requirements
General Education Requirements (31-40 credits)
Students studying the major in Journalism and Broadcasting (JRB) pursue either a Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science degree and must complete the corresponding degree’s requirements.
The major in Journalism and Broadcasting consists of at least 39 credits of course work in courses within the Department of Journalism, Broadcasting and Public Relations. In addition, students must complete a course of study in a disciplinary area outside the Department of Journalism, Broadcasting and Public Relations. Typically, students complete a minor (normally 18-21 credits) or a second major (normally 30-36 credits).
In lieu of a minor or second major in another discipline, students may elect, with department approval, a contractual program consisting of a minimum of 18 credits of courses in an area not identified as a formal minor or major at Brockport. Study of a foreign language other than Spanish or French (in which minors are offered), bilingual-multicultural studies or foreign cultural studies are encouraged for such a program.
Completion of all requirements for the major thus requires a minimum of 57 credits of required and elective courses.

Major Department Requirements (39 credits)
At least 39 credits (13 courses) including 12 credit hours (4 courses) of Required Core Courses plus 27 credit hours (9 courses) in one of the following concentrations:
- Media Production (JMP) for students interested in field and studio audio and video production.
- Multimedia Journalism (MMJ) for students interested in writing for online, print and broadcast media.
- Public Relations (PRPI) for students interested in helping organizations build relationships with publics that are important to them.
- Media Studies (JMS) for students interested in an in-depth examination of the relationship between media and society.
At least 12 credit hours in the major must be taken at Brockport. All students must also complete a minor (typically 18-21 credit hours) or a second major (typically 30-36 credit hours) in a discipline other than Journalism, Broadcasting and Public Relations.
PLEASE NOTE: Students should take JRB 200 or 227, JRB 242, plus JRB 224 or 243 during their first three semesters at SUNY Brockport.
IMPORTANT: JRB 200 or 227, 224, 242 and 243 must be completed with a grade of “C” or higher.

Students may choose to do a second major, typically 30-36 credits, instead of a minor. Choosing this would decrease the total number of elective credits needed for degree to approximately 2-14 elective credits.

Upon completion of the Journalism and Broadcasting Major, students will be able to:
