Bio

Gary J. Metz, MS, MPA, MAC, CPP, is the program coordinator and an associate professor of healthcare studies. He holds master’s degrees in health science and public administration from SUNY Brockport and he is a nationally recognized Master Addiction Counselor. Metz has over forty years of experience in the profession as an administrator, counselor, and educator. Prior to joining the Department, Metz served as the Associate Director of the Governor’s Task Force on Alcoholism Treatment and Criminal Justice, a multi-state agency initiative for addressing the substance abuse needs of the criminal justice and addictions treatment systems in New York State. He was also the Director of the St. Joseph’s Villa LIFE House, a residential treatment program for adolescents.

Metz has served as a consultant and director on numerous grants that provide substance abuse prevention, intervention and treatment programming to South America, near South East Asia and Russia. His research interest focuses on rural substance abuse prevention, substance abuse and criminal justice populations and cults, and sects and fringe group movements.

Metz is a certified police officer and serves as a deputy sheriff on the Orleans County Sheriff’s Criminal Division/Marine Unit. His unique experience provides insight into how the criminal justice and addictions treatment systems could provide a more coordinated, systematic, and effective approach to intervention and treatment for the substance abusive criminal justice client and their family.

Metz’s responsibilities include the administration of the Alcohol and Substance Abuse Studies Program at SUNY Brockport. This program is recognized by the New York State Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services (OASAS) and the National Association of Alcoholism and Drug Abuse Counselors (NAADAC) as an approved educational and training provider for preparing addiction counselors for the future. The New York State Institute for Professional Development in the Addictions has also recognized and honored SUNY Brockport Program with it’s New York State Award of Program Excellence in Addiction Education.
