Bio

Kaley Pruitt is originally from Ketchum, Idaho. She received her MFA in Dance & Choreography from University of Wisconsin Milwaukee where she was awarded the Distinguished Graduate Student Fellowship. She holds her BFA in Dance from Florida State University and was a member of Dance Repertory Theatre directed by Lynda Davis. She also studied at Footlight Dance Centre, Idyllwild Arts Academy, The Boston Conservatory, José Limón Dance Foundation, and with Doug Varone & Dancers. She founded her dance company Kaley Pruitt Dance in 2014 in New York City and has created over 25 works for the stage and screen. Pruitt has been commissioned by Repertory Dance Theatre, Wasatch Contemporary Dance Company, Fem Dance Company, Simantikos Dance Chicago, Illinois Shakespeare Festival, and Illinois State University. The company has been presented by: Rochester Fringe Festival, Austin Dance Festival, Simantikos Dance Chicago, Milwaukee Fringe Festival, WIM Dance Festival, ACDA National & Regional Conferences, University of Wisconsin Milwaukee, Dixon Place Theater, Green Space, Triskelion Arts, Manhattan Movement & Arts Center, Chez Bushwick and The Center for Performance Research, Built on Stilts, The Secret Theater, Ketchum Arts Commission, and Movement Research.

Alongside performing with Kaley Pruitt Dance, she has danced for choreographers: Jessica Heaton, Becky Radway Dance Projects, Maggi Dueker, Rose Hutchins, Esme Boyce, Leanne Schmidt & Company, The Treehouse Shakers, Megan Sipe, and Project Agent Orange. She’s also had the opportunity to perform works by José Limón, Steve Koester, Gerri Houlihan, Lynda Davis, Roger Bellman, Anne Krampen, Shelley Bourgeosis, & Jackie O’Toole. Kaley was previously on the dance faculty at Illinois State University & Illinois Wesleyan University, and Steffi Nossen School of Dance. She served on Dance/NYC’s Junior Committee from 2011-2014.

Research Interests

Pruitt’s research focuses primarily on kinesthetic empathy, interactivity in performance, and embodied civic discourse. She is interested in the choreography and psychology of protest and the body/movement’s role in social change. She believes understanding audience-performer relationship and crafting empowering embodied interaction is key to mobilizing dance and performance within our shifting social and political landscapes.
