Bio

Introduction: Dr. Korni Swaroop Kumar, Associate Professor in the Department of Criminal Justice, State University of New York, College at Brockport. He holds a M.S.W./M.A. degrees and a PhD in Sociology from Temple University, Philadelphia, PA. He served as Department Chairperson from 2004 to 2015. During this period due to his unfaltering enthusiasm and leadership skills for the department he has moved the department to the third largest major (700 students) on campus. Also, under his direction, the department developed and introduced a minor in forensic science in 2008. One of the fastest growing minors at the college.

Research/publication Focus: His research and publications focus on the areas of homicide, media presentation of homicide, police practices, correctional practices and deviance. He has been a participant in professional conferences at the regional/state-wide, national (NYSSA, CJEANYS, ASA, ASC, and ACJS) and international (Tokyo, Austria, Hungary, India, Dubai, and Canada) level. He has received several college level research grants between 1994 - 2014. He secured multiple grants at the college level and more recently he secured an NSF collaborative grant with colleagues from University of Buffalo, Buffalo, NY.

Professional Participation: This includes two National Endowments for the Humanities Summer Seminars – 1994 and 1995. Further, he has participated in multiple professional training programs to enhance skills in the area of teaching, program development and leadership.

Professional Recognition: He was awarded the Dr. Nuala McGann Drescher Affirmative Action Leave Award (Fall 1998) and was the recipient of two Chancellor’s Awards: “Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching – 2002,” and “Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Faculty Service – 2004.”

Professional Affiliations: Since 1993, he has been an active member of the New York State Sociological Association (NYSSA). Due to his commitment to the organization he served as President of the NYSSA for three terms (1999-2000, 2005-2006, and 2014-2015). His continuing enthusiasm and leadership skills for the organization have been recognized by NYSSA and two more appointments were made: Treasurer (responsibility he shares with Prof. Tim Delaney, Sociology Department, SUNY College at Oswego), and Archivist. At the 2004 annual meetings he received the “Professional Commitment, Excellence / Distinguished Service Award.” In addition, since 1993, he continues to be actively involved in the Criminal Justice Educators Association of New York State (CJEANYS), and is a life member of this professional group. His continued commitment and leadership skills for the organization have been recognized by the CJEANYS and he served as the Regional Vice President (2004-2011). At the 2005 and 2011 annual meetings of CJEANYS he received the “Service Award.”

Professional Certification and service to professional community: He is a “Certified ACJS Academic Certification Reviewer,” (Spring 2007) training organized by the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences. Since then he has reviewed a dozen programs throughout the State of New York, including programs at community colleges, four year colleges, and master’s programs.
