As a collective, attendees will identify some of these myths and myth/contradictions, while conjuring strategies to organize others to combat systems that reproduce public health disparities among the U.S. populace. Implications for social activists, leaders, and organizers will be discussed.

Dr. Rafael Outland is an assistant professor in the Department of Counselor Education at SUNY Brockport. He holds a doctorate degree in Counselor Education and Supervision from the University of Rochester, a master’s in Education from Boston University, and a bachelor’s in Psychology from Clark Atlanta University. His research focuses on the influence of historical and institutional violence on the lived experiences of marginalized populations, primarily poor Black and Brown youth. His most recent work investigated the impact of police killings on the family and community of youth victims in Northeast, Midwest, and West Coast U.S.
Dr. Outland has remained a vital support and advocate for Rochester’s urban youth through collaboration with local organizations, including Goodfellas, Teen Empowerment (TE), the Gandhi Institute for Non-Violence, In-Control, Citizens Action Network, and the People’s Liberation Program (PLP). Furthermore, he remains involved in national and international campaigns to release elder U.S. Political Prisoners (PPs) and Prisoners of War (POWs), including the Free Maroon and Kamau Coalitions, as well as the Free Mumia Campaign. He is a native of College Park, GA and has lived in Rochester, NY for the past 11 years.
