Mahreen joined Partners in Restorative Initiatives in 2019 and became Education Coordinator in 2020. She served as PiRI’s Interim Executive Director from March to September 2021 and was honored to be appointed as PiRI’s Co-Executive Director for Equity and Programming.
Mahreen’s journey to Restorative Practices began during her work in the Rochester City School District. She was trained by PiRI and was fortunate to be able to use many Restorative skills in the classroom, school-wide, and district-level settings. Since joining PiRI, she has completed additional training in Restorative Justice Conferencing.
Mahreen’s passion for equity-centered Restorative work comes from her experience with facilitation and amplifying historically untapped voices. She has experienced firsthand how Restorative Practices foster communities of trust and belonging, and she is excited to continue this work with PiRI.
Creating pathways for Restorative Practices in the wider community is a central focus of Mahreen’s work with PiRI. She has presented at the Urban League Interrupt Racism Summit and was a founding member of the Rochester Black Lives Matter at School organizing committee. She is currently engaged in service opportunities centered on anti-racism, equity, and social justice. Mahreen has been trained in Culturally Responsive Education and was a participant in the 2021 American University Summer Institute on Education, Equity, and Justice. She holds a certificate in Nonprofit Management from St. John Fisher College and Culturally Responsive Literature Instruction from the Harvard Graduate School of Education.
Born in Toronto, Ontario, Mahreen received her degree from the University of Toronto in 2002. She enjoys traveling with her family and once took a ten-week cross-country road trip to experience the wonders of our National Parks from coast to coast. Mahreen is a proud City of Rochester resident, where she lives with her spouse and two children (whose current mission is convincing her to add a furry family member to the household).
