Title: Registration Open: Brockport Debate Society’s Digital Advocacy Competition

Date: September 13, 2021
Summary: Registration is now open to all Brockport Students interested in competing in the Brockport Debate Society’s Digital Advocacy Competition. Register and submit a video-recorded persuasive speech advocating for a solution to an issue facing our society.
Body:

The Brockport Debate Society (BDS) invites you to participate in a digital advocacy competition taking place over the course of the Fall 2021 semester. The goal of the event is to showcase the public speaking, research, and advocacy skills of Brockport students as they identify significant issues facing our society as well as offer relevant solutions to address them.

The BDS Digital Advocacy Competition asks students to prepare, present, and record a four-minute persuasive speech over an issue of community, regional, national, or international concern. In your speech, you will identify an appropriate concern or issue as well as offer an argument for its support, rejection, and/or an alternative way of looking at the topic. You have total freedom in choosing the topic with which you’ll advocate about, for, or against. All students will participate in a preliminary round in which competitors will submit their recorded speeches. The videos will be evenly distributed to a set of judges (Brockport faculty members) and scored on argument quality, persuasive advocacy, and public speaking. Afterward, the top 10 speakers will be announced and invited to participate in a final round. The final round will have all eligible speakers prepare, present, and record a four-minute persuasive speech answering the same question: What do you see as the most important issue facing society in the next 10 years? The final speeches will be evenly distributed to a set of judges and scored based on the same rubric from the preliminary round. The top three finalists will be awarded certificates as well as gift cards! Last year, first place won $200, second place won $150, and third place won $100.

To register, fill out the online registration form. Once you register, you’ll receive an information packet with the next steps for the competition. If you have any questions, feel free to direct them to the club advisor Dr. Thomas.
