Developing Critical Social Justice Literacy by Reading Young Adult Literature

English education and literacy faculty partnered with graduate students to apply social justice concepts to popular young adult literature titles.

Drs. Cody Miller (English education) and Kathleen Colantonio-Yurko (literacy) along with graduate students Katia Nasra (English education), Alex Mulroy (English education), Reed Sanchez (literacy), and Heather Mufford (literacy) published an article in the journal Ubiquity: The Journal of Literature, Literacy, and the Arts.

Their article, “Developing Critical Social Justice Literacy by Reading Young Adult Literature: Reflections and Implications on Future Classroom Practice” analyze four popular young adult titles using three common concepts in social justice education. The article offers suggestions for new teachers in enacting social justice-aligned English teaching.
