Environmental Science & Ecology Faculty Receives FL-PRISM Award

Dr. Kathryn Amatangelo was awarded a Finger Lakes Partnership for Regional Invasive Species Management (FL-PRISM) grant for Spotted Lanternfly early detection.

Dr. Kathryn Amatangelo was awarded $18,999 from the Finger Lakes Partnership for Regional Invasive Species Management (FL-PRISM) for Spotted Lanternfly early detection. The funds are distributed by Hobart and William Smith Colleges.  Dr. Amatangelo and SUNY Brockport graduate student Ray Marszalek will collaborate with the NYS Office of Parks, Recreation, and Historic Preservation; the Monroe County Parks Department; and the Genesee Land Trust/Friends of Webster Trails on this project.

The Spotted Lanternfly (Lycorma delicatula) is an invasive insect that threatens many economically important species in our area, including grapevines, maples, and fruit trees. One infestation is present near Ithaca, NY, and there have been additional sightings in Monroe, Ontario, and Yates Counties. Dr. Amatangelo and her team will install and monitor circle traps in parks to evaluate the presence of Spotted Lantern flies throughout the region. Informational signs will also be posted at each monitoring site to provide information about the invasive pest.
