Week 14: September 30, 2022

I really like these two quotes on a brisk and sunny Friday as we close September:

“Keep your face always toward the sunshine―and shadows will fall behind you.” – Walt Whitman

“Be thankful for what you have; you’ll end up having more. If you concentrate on what you don’t have, you will never, ever have enough.” – Oprah Winfrey

We made it through the first full month of the academic year. It has been busy – opening of the year events, new and exciting marketing plans, major campus celebrations upon us – and more is coming. Take care of yourselves as we hit a very busy stretch.

October birthdays: Kerry (4th) and John S. (6th). And Patrick and Alex (10/17/19) both started their Brockport careers on the same date three years ago. Brad began his second Brockport run on 10/30/06.

In news this week:

  • Our Marketing team has published a new view book for undergraduate recruitment purposes, and the new TV commercial is finalized. Look for the latter on your screens in the coming days. Check in with team members if you would like copies of the view book or an early sneak-peek at the commercial.
  • President Macpherson and I did an interview with the D&C on Tuesday about the Fannie Barrier Williams Building dedication. The story should be coming out soon. And Wanda Hendricks, FBW’s biographer, will be interviewed by Evan Dawson on “Connections” on WXXI next Wednesday at 1 pm.
  • The Brockport Foundation and Brockport Alumni Association audit was presented to the Foundation Audit Committee on Tuesday night. The results were very positive with no concerns expressed by our audit firm of Bowers & Company. The two boards will vote to accept the results at their Joint Meeting next Friday.
  • The College Council met on Wednesday night for the first time this year and received reports from the President and Provost, as well as an enrollment update from Sara Kelly and a status report on the FBW Scholars from Jianna Howard. Two of the FBW Scholars also joined the meeting.
  • The 17th Annual Courage Bowl festivities kicked off with the luncheon yesterday in SERC. Camp Good Days founder and alumnus Gary Mervis ’71 shared the history of the game and presented an award to a former camper. Thanks to Danique, Dan, and team for working with CGD staff to pull everything together.
  • Stuart Soloway has agreed to serve as chair of the 2024 Solar Eclipse Committee. I will be meeting with him this afternoon to go over some details and chatting with him regularly for status reports.

Upcoming events:

  • Summer Undergraduate Research Program (SURP) Poster Session, TODAY, 1-3 pm, Drake Library
  • Courage Bowl football game vs. St. John Fisher, Sat., 10/1, 6 pm
  • October Team Day, 10/4. We look forward to the fun that Brad and Darcy have in store for us!
  • BPort Homecoming & Family Weekend, including FBW Building dedication, Thurs.-Sat., 10/6-8

Enjoy the weekend!
