The fall semester is here. Welcome Week activities and Move-In continue today and this weekend and classes start Monday.
Academic Convocation for our first-year students is this afternoon at 4 pm in SERC. Please try to join us if you are on campus and available. The ceremony will be about an hour and there will be a dessert reception afterward.
Thanks to all members of the Division who have assisted with the move-in process for our students. The campus really appreciates all of the participation.
Thanks to everyone for the participation in Monday’s Divisional meeting. Congrats to Darcy, Dan, Matthew, Anthony, Amy, and Rich for winning the scavenger hunt – the pickle was the key! – and special thanks to Amy for all of the food planning. Our next “Team Day” is Sept. 20 with David leading the activities.
President Macpherson and Provost Abraham provided addresses to the campus this week. I was able to visit with the first cohort (30 students) of Fannie Barrier Williams Scholars and share a history of the College and some of FBW’s background. I also was able to meet with 16 of our current international students at a reception yesterday. We have students from Germany, Ireland, Japan, India, Cyprus, and the U.K. on campus this year and will be launching a host program with these students. If you are interested in knowing more about being a host (basically being a contact for the students; they would not live with you), let me know.
Also this week, the Care & Celebration Committee met for the first time this year and discussed a number of ways to build community and morale on campus. Keep the afternoon of Thursday, Sept. 22, available on your calendar for a cider and donuts reception that will be open to all faculty and staff. The only stipulation: you must bring someone with you from another part of campus. Stay tuned for more details.
On an unfortunate note, we have had some serious water damage at Alumni House after the recent rains. We are working with our insurance company and fear that the House may need to go off-line for a while as repairs are made. We’ll keep everyone posted on status.
Upcoming next week: the first issue of The Port for the year (9/1); First Friday in the NY Room in Cooper Hall (9/2 at 4 pm); and the football opener (9/3 at noon).
Enjoy your weekend!
