2020-02-17 - Campus Climate Report

Dear Colleagues,

Brockport should be a great place for everyone to work—welcoming, respectful, and inclusive. Improving the campus climate is my highest priority. To achieve this, Brockport must make greater progress on our Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Strategic Plan.

Last fall, I engaged a consultant, Mr. Curtis Lloyd, to review the campus climate for employees. Mr. Lloyd is the former Vice Chancellor for HR at SUNY. He interviewed a total of 27 individuals, including leaders who had a formal role to play in equity and diversity work (the cabinet, the CDO, the AVP for HR, the President’s Council on Diversity and Inclusion [PCDI] leadership, and me), as well as individuals who requested to speak with Mr. Lloyd.

I first shared the results of his report with campus on November 6.

The executive summary of the report pointed to a need to provide additional support to our students, particularly students with accessibility concerns and under-represented students. As a result, on January 10, Cabinet reviewed and approved a proposal for a mini-bridge program and mentoring plan for under-represented, low-income and first-generation students. The Joint Planning and Budget Committee (JPBC) offered final approval of the program on their first meeting of the spring semester on February 13.

In his report, Mr. Lloyd noted communication challenges on campus, distrust, and heightened tension. I am committed to addressing each of these issues. The campus itself needs likewise to commit to this process. This includes taking part in our surveys on campus values, on campus climate, and on what you wish to see both from the Office of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion and from leadership more broadly.

Last week I announced a series of initiatives that will assist our campus with climate issues, and which also focus on the well-being of our student body in addition to our faculty and staff. This report was the first stage of the work we were doing, and it will be ongoing.

Together as a community we must make purposeful and necessary investments to change our culture. I entreat you to join me in this period of introspection, review, and analysis, as we work together to Build a Better Brockport.
