Hear Me Out!
DATE & TIME
October 9 from 3:35 – 5 pm
PURPOSE & OBJECTIVE
The Intercultural Center is partnering with Talon Academy to host their second workshop titled “Hear Me Out!” This workshop will be a safe space for males of Color to express their views and perspectives about recent acts of police terrorism and their impact on the emotions and psychology of Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC). There will be further discussion about local police violence including the murder of Daniel Prude by Rochester Police Department, and local activism to demand justice for the Prude family. Lastly, attendees will discuss and learn ways to channel their emotions, energy, and skills to contribute to the struggle against police terrorism in the U.S.
It will be facilitated by Dr. Rafael Outland, a professor in the Counselor Education Department who has years of experience/research on the influence of violence on the lived experiences of marginalized populations, primarily poor Black and Brown youth. His most recent work investigated the impact of police killings on the family and community of youth victims in Northeast, Midwest, and West Coast U.S. Dr. Outland has remained a vital support and advocate for Rochester’s urban youth through collaboration with local organizations, including Goodfellas, Teen Empowerment, and the Gandhi Institute for Non-Violence.
