Counseling Process

College Counseling is an information sharing process designed to help you address your concerns, to obtain relief from your symptoms, to come to a fuller understanding of yourself, and to learn effective personal and interpersonal coping strategies. It involves a partnership between you and a trained therapist who has the knowledge, expertise and experience to help you accomplish your individual goals.

The Counseling Center cultivates and supports student resiliency with a confidential and culturally sensitive space that helps Brockport students in the following ways:

  • Provide students the tools and opportunity to reflect on strengths and areas of difficulties and work toward what is important to them. We recognize that struggles are a natural part of the college experience and help students recognize this as well
  • Provide students with the skills to view challenges as opportunities for growth and learning. Challenges are actively worked on in a variety of ways (increasing self-awareness, building communication skills, risk-taking)
  • Provide students with resources to engage with others and build fulfilling relationships in college and beyond. We assist students in connecting with groups, workshops, student activities, and external supports

Forms to Complete

When you call the Counseling Center, we will ask you to complete two online questionnaires that let us get to know you better and may even help you to define more clearly, what is concerning you. In either case, the information allows us to help you more effectively.

Client Responsibility

In order to best utilize your appointments, the client will:

  • Participate actively in the sessions
  • Be on time for your appointments
  • Cancel appointments as soon as is practicable prior to your meeting if you cannot make it

Counselor Responsibility

In order to assist you with your growth process, the counselor will:

  • Listen non-judgmentally to what you have to say
  • Be respectful of you as a person
  • Be on time for your appointments, so you can get the full benefit from your session
  • Cancel appointments as soon as is practicable prior to your meeting if he or she is not available

Cost of Services

Services are free of charge to all registered students, as part of the health fee. In some situations there may be a fee for specialized services (e.g. students involved in an on- or off-campus legal/court action).

Students that do not call to cancel a scheduled appointment with the psychiatrist by 4 pm the day before their appointment will be charged a $20 fee. The charge will be applied to the student bill. If three or more “no shows” or late cancellations occur, a decision will be made if we can continue to evaluate and/or treat the student. The decision may be made to refer the student to an outside provider for ongoing treatment. Students that feel there are special circumstances related to the missed appointment or late cancellation may request a review by completing the “No Show Waiver” form.

Confidentiality

All clinical services offered by Counseling Center are confidential. This means that information about you will not be released to anyone without your written permission except in limited circumstances.

Non-Discrimination Policy

SUNY Brockport Hazen Center for Integrated Care supports all initiatives to create a campus climate guided by the values of cultural inclusion, respect, equality and equity. Such a climate is essential to college health. Consistent with those values, the Hazen Center for Integrated Care rejects all forms of intolerance and subtler forms of discriminatory conduct with respect to the following: age; gender identity, including transgender; marital status; physical size; race/ethnicity; psychological/physical/learning disability; religious, spiritual or cultural identity; sex; sexual orientation; socioeconomic status; or veteran status.

No Show Policy

If a student is unable to attend their counseling session, we ask that they cancel their appointment by calling 585-395-2414 or using the MyHazen Portal. If a student does not show for two appointments without notifying the Counseling Center, their case may be closed for the remainder of the semester.
