Statement of Objectives & Social Issue Discussion:

In a well-developed essay of no more than 1,200 words, discuss your understanding of the profession of social work and include the following:

  1. Clearly explain your personal and professional goals including a rationale for pursuing a MSW degree. Please include why SUNY Brockport’s MSW Program is the most appropriate program for you and how it will help you achieve your professional goals.
  2. Articulate your professional readiness to undertake graduate social work education at this time. Including, but not limited to:
    • Your academic preparation, relevant work history, level of self-awareness, cultural competence, maturity, and any additional related information.
    • Address any grades of D or lower received in your undergraduate experience and/or a GPA below 3.0 (if applicable).
  3. Please discuss any anticipated work or community commitments that bear on the time demands needed for the successful completion of the required coursework and daytime field hours needed for field education in the MSW program.
  4. Briefly discuss a social issue that is important to you.
    • Give an analysis of your capacity to engage in professional practice around this issue, while working toward and after achieving your MSW.

Pre-requisites:

Minimum of 24 credits* of undergraduate liberal arts coursework in the following:

  1. Six (6) credits must be in the social or behavioral sciences (e.g., psychology, sociology, anthropology, political science;
  2. Six (6) credits must be in the arts or humanities (e.g., history, English, foreign languages, philosophy, ethnic/gender studies;
  3. 12 credits may be any combination of the above or with courses from the natural sciences or mathematics.

*Applicants that do not meet the above coursework may be required to take additional coursework or equivalency testing as outlined in their official letter of acceptance.

Please Note: Part-time status may be offered to students applying for full-time admissions based on, but not limited to the following: GPA below 3.0, letters of reference, writing sample, and prior experience.
