My name is Dr. Kathleen Peterson and I’m a Professor and Chairperson in the Department of Nursing.
We offer a variety of programs to meet the needs of many different groups of students interested in becoming nurses. Our traditional undergraduate program is a four- year program for students interested in becoming nurses. We also offer a BS to BSN accelerated program for individuals who have a bachelor’s degree in another field and wish to become nurses. We have a RN to BSN completion program for associate degree prepared registered nurses who wish to continue their education and a graduate program for baccalaureate prepared registered nurses who wish to become family nurse practitioners. Many of our undergraduate nursing applicants become successful alumni who contribute to the health and well-being of their community and return to the University when they are ready to take the next step and enroll in our graduate program. Take a few moments to review the options we offer and some of the highlights you can experience within the programs themselves.
Students Interested in the Traditional Undergraduate Program (Incoming Freshmen and Transfer Students)
For new and prospective students, it is important to understand how the Nursing department handles applications and progression into the traditional nursing program. While acceptance to Brockport is a huge step, it does not necessarily mean progression into the Nursing program. All Brockport students who intend to progress into the traditional nursing program are considered “Nursing Intents” until they have applied for progression and been accepted into the Nursing program. The program is highly competitive and has a list of pre-requisites that each student must fulfill before applying to the program.
The first two years of course work will revolve around completion of your general education requirements and pre-requisites, concluding with your application for progression into the program submitted by January. Applicants are notified of their progression status into the program by March. Questions about this program may be directed to tfarnham@brockport.edu, slowey@brockport.edu, or lawilson@brockport.edu.
Students Interested in the BS to BSN Accelerated Program
Applications for this program are accepted between August 1 and October 1 of each year with notification of acceptance in December. This program is the same as our traditional program, but uses summer semesters, thus students enter this program in May of each year and graduate the August of the following year. The same pre-requisites are required for this program, as well as a previously earned Bachelor’s degree. Questions related to this program may be directed to kbingham@brockport.edu or najohnson@brockport.edu.
Students Interested in the RN to BSN Program
If you are a licensed registered nurse with an associate’s degree, this program is for you! This program is available fully online and may be completed either part-time or full-time. Students are accepted into this program for fall, spring or summer start. We encourage you to have your nursing license in hand when you begin this program. Questions related to this program may be directed to, najohnson@brockport.edu or rnbsn@brockport.edu.
Master of Science in Nursing program which prepares Family Nurse Practitioners (FNP)
Applications to this program are open February 1 to April 1of each year for fall admissions. For the fall of 2018 cohort, only full time students will be eligible though non-matriculated students may be eligible to take up to 9 credit hours before being admitted to the program. Nurse practitioners who wish to apply for the post-masters certificate are admitted on a rolling basis and should contact the program director to formulate a specific course plan. Students enrolled in the FNP program will complete over 700 clinical hours providing primary care within your own community. Questions regarding this program may be directed to fnp@brockport.edu or rlockett@brockport.edu .
There is a plethora of opportunities for students in the nursing program. We offer many scholarships and awards, one specifically for Nursing Intents involved in the Army ROTC program. Students enrolled in all programs have multiple opportunities for short travel abroad learning programs in a variety of countries. Throughout the nursing programs, all students engage in hands on training including mentored real world experiences and high-fidelity simulation in order to best prepare you for your career.
