What You’ll Learn
Rap music is now the most popular genre in the country, and it is hard to imagine a world without hip-hop culture. From music to fashion, to business, to movies, to the way that we talk—it impacts everything around us.
This highly interdisciplinary program provides students with a solid background in African-American history to better understand the roots of the movement. It also has an international scope that addresses how Hip-Hop is a voice to the voiceless across the world. Interdepartmental electives underscore the fact that Hip-Hop is more than just music, but an entire culture.

Curriculum
Since the late 1970s, Hip-Hop has reflected the realities of marginalized people across the globe, from African-Americans in the poorest parts of New York City to first-generation immigrants outside of Paris.
Our Hip-Hop minor is an innovative, unexpected and intriguing way for students to complement their degree in African and African-American studies, political science, history, English, international studies, French, Spanish, art, music, communications, criminal justice, social work, sociology, and women and gender studies.

Career Outlook
As one of the very few programs of its kind in the country, our Hip-Hop scholars will have a unique minor which displays individuality and a courageous ambition to potential employers.
A Hip-Hop minor communicates a keen understanding of many issues concerning national and international diversity, multiculturalism, and societal conflict which are needed in many fields.
