Overview

The Social Host Program is part of a university-wide strategic goal to enhance the Brockport student experience, by facilitating greater engagement between students and Brockport faculty, staff, alumni, and local families.

The program is designed to be an informal way for international students to connect with volunteer hosts in the Brockport community, agreeing to get together once a month or so. Students and hosts build relationships that best fit their needs, meeting at mutually convenient times. Please note that this is not a homestay program.

The program gives international students the opportunity to explore Brockport and surrounding areas with their hosts, engage in meaningful dialogue, and enjoy a connection to the area that they might not otherwise experience.

Who can become a host?

Single individuals, married couples, and families with children are encouraged to participate as hosts. To apply, fill out this interest form.

Expectations

Once hosts have been matched with their international student, International Student Services will work to host an initial gathering. Being a host family is not intended to be time consuming. Some things we recommend a host family do are:

  • Check in with your student on a regular basis and aim to get together once per month.
  • Learn about the student’s culture and country
  • Be a friend to your student

It is important to note that hosts are NOT responsible for handling any school related issues (ex. immigration regulations, billing, tutoring, healthcare, etc.).

Things to Note

There are various times during the academic year that campus services are limited or closed. For those students who choose to remain on campus during these times, these would be great opportunities to connect. View the Academic Calendar here for specific date of the following:

  • Labor Day
  • Mid-semester break
  • Thanksgiving Recess
  • Winter Break
  • Spring Recess
