What You’ll Learn
In our History and Social Studies Adolescence Education program, you will delve into history from around the world, from Asia to Africa to Europe and Latin America. Along with that, you will take political science, geography, and economics courses. The curriculum will help you develop a broad knowledge base and critical thinking, research, communication, and problem-solving skills vital for classroom teachers.
In the certification program you’ll learn how adolescents learn, how to teach literacy and social studies, and how to manage a classroom. You’ll get practical field experience before student teaching. By graduation you’ll be well prepared to teach social studies in today’s diverse classrooms.

Curriculum
Coursework is tailored to preparing you to teach the NYS 7-12 social studies curriculum and includes two research-based history courses. The one true major elective can be a history internship. Qualified students can do the combined history bachelor’s and master’s degree program, or simply continue on to the MA in history, which counts for professional teacher certification in social studies.
The History and Social Studies Adolescence Education program leads to initial single certification in Social Studies Adolescence Education, Grades 5-12.
