Peter Conners

Nonfiction Writer and Poet

Peter Conners is the author of several collections of poetry and fiction including The Crows Were Laughing in their Trees, Of Whiskey and Winter, and the novella Emily Ate the Wind. He has also published a memoir, Growing Up Dead: The Hallucinated Confessions of a Teenage Deadhead, and two collections of nonfiction, White Hand Society: The Psychedelic Partnership of Timothy Leary and Allen Ginsberg, and, most recently, JAMerica: An Oral History of the Jam Band Scene. Peter lives in Rochester, NY, where he is publisher of BOA Editions.


Joanie Mackowski

Cancelled due to weather

Joanie Mackowski’s collections of poems are The Zoo (winner of the 2000 AWP Award in Poetry) and View from a Temporary Window. She was a Stegner Fellow in poetry at Stanford University, and is the winner of the 2003 Kate Tufts Discovery Award, and the 2008 Emily Dickinson Award from the Poetry Society of America. She has worked as a French translator, a journalist in the San Francisco Bay Area, and a juggler, and is currently a professor at Cornell University.


Michael Klein

Poet and Memoirist

Michael Klein is a four-time Lambda Literary Award finalist and two-time winner (for Poets for Life: Poets Respond to AIDS and his first book of poems, 1990, which shared the award with James Schuyler’s Collected Poems). He is the author of two books of prose, The End of Being Known and Track Conditions, both from the University of Wisconsin Press, and a recent collection of poems, The Talking Day (Sibling Rivalry Press). He lives in New York City and Provincetown with his husband, Andrew Hood, and he teaches in the MFA in Writing Program at Goddard College in Vermont.


Barbara Hamby

Barbara Hamby is the author of numerous books, including the collection of stories, Lester Higata’s 20th Century, which won the Iowa Short Fiction Prize; Babel, which was chosen for the 2003 Associated Writing Programs Donald Hall Prize; The Alphabet of Desire, recipient of the 1998 New York University Prize for Poetry; and Delirium, winner of the 1994 Vassar Miller Prize. She has also been honored with the Kate Tufts Discovery Award, the Poetry Society of America’s Norma Farber First Book Award, and fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation and the National Endowment for the Arts. She lives in Tallahassee, FL, where she is Distinguished University Scholar at Florida State University.


Rick Bass

Essayist and Fiction Writer

This reading will be held at 7:30 pm at Temple B’rith Kodesh, 2131 Elmwood Ave., Rochester. The Art of Fact Award is generously funded by M&T Bank.

Rick Bass has published more than 20 books– short stories and novels, nonfiction, science writing, and journalism. His work has received numerous awards, including O. Henry Awards, Pushcart Prizes, awards from the Texas Institute of Letters (in fiction, creative nonfiction, and journalism), the fellowships from the NEA, the Guggenheim Foundation, the Lyndhurst Foundation, the Mississippi Institute of Arts and Letters, and a Pen/Nelson Algren Special Citation. A collection of stories, The Hermit’s Story, was named a Los Angeles Times Best Book of the Year. The Lives of Rocks was a finalist for the Story Prize, and was named a Best Book of the Year by the Rocky Mountain News. His most recent nonfiction book, Why I Came West, was a finalist for a National Book Critics Circle Award. He is the recipient of a 2011 Montana Arts Council Artist’s Innovation Award, and lives in Montana with his family.
