Peter Benson

British Novelist

Peter Benson is the award-winning author of nine novels, as well as short stories, poetry and screenplays. He has won numerous awards for his works, including The Encore Award for his novel A Lesser Dependency (1989) and The Somerset Maugham Award for The Other Occupant (1990). His novel Two Cows and a Vanful of Smoke was one of eight British works selected for promotion through the 2012 Fiction Uncovered program. His latest novel, Isabel’s Skin, was published in August 2012. He was named a fellow at the University of Leicester in 2002 and has taught at Wake Forest University, North Carolina, The University of Plymouth, East Devon College, The Arvon Foundation and Ty Newydd Writers’ Centre.


Wendy Barker

Poet, essayist, and fiction writer

Wendy Barker is poet-in-residence and a professor of English at the University of Texas at San Antonio, where she has taught since 1982. She has published five books of poetry and three chapbooks, as well as a selection of poems with accompanying drafts and essays about the writing process. Barker’s poems have appeared in such journals as Poetry, The American Scholar and The Southern Poetry Review. Her personal essays have appeared in Poets & Writers, Southwest Review, and the online journal cerisepress.com. She is the recipient of fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Rockefeller Foundation.


Anne Panning

Anne Panning is a professor of English at SUNY Brockport, where she codirects the Writers Forum. She is the author of two collections of short stories, The Price of Eggs and Super America, which won the 2006 Flannery O’Connor Prize for Short Fiction. Her creative nonfiction and short stories have appeared in such publications as the Beloit Fiction Journal, Prairie Schooner, Quarterly West, Black Warrior Review, and In Short. Her first novel, Butter, was published in October 2012.


Chris Norment

Chris Norment is professor of Environmental Science and Biology at SUNY Brockport, where he specializes in the breeding biology and ecology of migratory birds. In addition to numerous scientific articles, he is author of In the Memory of the Map: A Cartographic Memoir; Return to Warden’s Grove: Science, Desire, and the Lives of Sparrows; and In the North of Our Lives: A Year in the Wilderness of Northern Canada.


Bruce Smith

Bruce Smith is a professor of English at Syracuse University. He is the author of six books of poems, including The Other Lover, which was a finalist for both the National Book Award and the Pulitzer Prize. His most recent collection, Devotions, was a finalist for the National Book Award, the National Book Critics Circle Award and the Los Angeles Times Book Award. He has served as a coeditor of the Graham House Review and a contributing editor of Born Magazine. He was named a Guggenheim fellow in 2000 and has twice been a recipient of fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts. In 2010, he received an Arts and Letters Award in Literature from the American Academy of Arts and Letters.


Robert Pinsky

Former US Poet Laureate Robert Pinsky is the author of 19 books, most of which are collections of his own poetry. His published work also includes critically acclaimed translations, including The Inferno of Dante and The Separate Notebooks by Czeslaw Milosz. His honors include an Arts and Letters Award in Literature from the American Academy of Arts and Letters, the William Carlos Williams Award, the Shelley Memorial prize from the Poetry Society of America and the PEN/Voelcker Award for Poetry. Pinsky is also a recipient of the National Endowment for the Humanities Fellowship and a Guggenheim Foundation fellowship, and he served as a chancellor for the Academy of American Poets. He is currently poetry editor of the weekly Internet magazine Slate and teaches in the graduate writing program at Boston University.
